Dev Continues Her Push for Traffic Enforcement as Deaths Rise

Davis’s Continued Calls to Increase Traffic Enforcement Staffing Denied by Mayor and Council

At a press conference for Vision Zero, a commitment made by the city in 2015 to eliminate traffic deaths, Councilwoman Davis expressed her frustration with City Council’s refusal to commit more resources to traffic enforcement. As San José proceeds at a record pace for roadway deaths, Dev took the opportunity to speak about priorities.

“I can not tell you how angry I am that we are not taking traffic enforcement as seriously as we need to,”

Mayor Liccardo stated that the priority should be on filling staff vacancies, however as Dev points out, those spots could have been filled with officers currently assigned to other areas. This issue has been a years long effort by Councilmember Davis. Dev made requests of the Mayor at last year’s budget meeting to increase the number of officers assigned to traffic crimes. She was refused at that time as well. As Mayor, Dev’s priority will be to add 250 officers by 2030 during her terms, with a significant portion allocated to traffic enforcement.
