Hello Neighbor,
Last week Tuesday, some City Council members proposed to expand local voting rights to non-U.S. Citizens. Dev Davis stood alone against this proposal. Dev voted no because she feels that voting is a right and responsibility of citizenship, and she stays true to her core values. This proposal will now move forward to a study session to determine the details. Ultimately, you may see this issue on either the June or November ballot this year.
This is a common sense issue. We do not need to hear from experts.
Some argue that non-citizens paying taxes is not fair if they cannot vote. However, taxes pay for services all residents receive regardless of citizenship status, such as police and fire protection, street paving, and use of parks and libraries.
Spending staff time and money on studying this issue is not a good use of our limited resources.
We need a leader like Dev Davis to be our next Mayor. She could have easily played politics and voted with all the others and explained after that she was trying to let it be studied then vote it down. Not only is this a waste of staff time and a cost to taxpayers, but once staff spends time to study something it is harder to reject it. And voting for it before voting against it would have been a coward’s way out.
In order to ensure we get the leader we deserve and need, The Dev Davis for Mayor Campaign needs your help. Please donate whatever you can. Every dollar will help. And please do it today.
